The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Y-9 is a medium-sized transport aircraft developed by Shaanxi Aircraft Company as the Chinese counterpart to the US C-130J Hercules transport aircraft. The Y-9 is a further development of the Y-8/An-12 aircraft family. The four-engine aircraft performed its maiden flight in 2010 and entered service in 2016. The FWJ-6C engines drive a six-blade propeller and the aircraft is able to lift a payload of up to 25 tons over a distance of more than 5,000 kilometers. The Y-9 aircraft has been adopted by the PLA Air Force (PLAAF), PLA Navy (PLAN) and the ground force (Y-9LH) with at least one export customer known so far. The Y-9E designation refers to export models. Y-9JB is an electronic warfare and surveillance variant. Y-9XZ is special operations variant. The Y-9G is a pure electronic warfare variant. The Y-9 is also the basic platform used on the KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft.

The GX-11 is an intelligence gathering aircraft developed by China as the replacement for the GX-4 airplane on the basis of the Y-9 tactical transport aircraft. The GX-11 airplane is specially tailored to gather information in the South China Sea and the East China Sea in the event of a military conflict. It features an hemispheric radar under the chin, two large antennas on each side of the plane, an antenna on each side of the tailfin and an electronic warfare (EW) pod on top of the tailfin. All in, are intended to monitor enemy communications and radar signals. In addition it can be used for jamming and/or suppressing enemy air defense system increasing the odds of successful missile strikes. The existence of the GX-11 intelligence aircraft was made public in March 2019.

The Gaoxin-9 is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) airplane developed for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) based upon the Y-9 four-turboprop powered aircraft. The Gaoxin-9 was first shown in a military parade in Beijing in 2019 celebrating the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic and was first deployed by the PLAN in 2020.
