Armata

Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : January 2024
Total Production : 2,300

The Armata is a new family of tracked heavy armored vehicles being developed for the Russian Armed Forces by Uralvagonzavod Research and Production Corporation since 2010. The original aim of the Armata program was to develop a new generation main battle tank (MBT). The Russian Army concerns about the quality of the T-90 tanks and its intended successors the Black Eagle and T-95 prototypes led to the cancellation of the T-95 and prevented any more T-90A orders from the Russian Army. The Armata is a new design aimed at fixing the low quality concerns of Russian-made MBTs. The Russian Army also aimed the new program at delivering an entire family of tracked heavy armored vehicles. The Armata family propulsion system consists of a 1,500-hp diesel engine with a fully mechanized electric transmission with maintenance and repair schedules extended compared with existing heavy armored vehicle's propulsion systems. Between 2010 and 2015 the vehicle's main components were tested by the Uralvagonzavod and the military leading to the production of 20 prototypes in 2015 for troop's evaluation. The Armata family is expected to be ready for mass production by 2017 entering into active duty with the Russian Army soon after. The Armata heavy armored vehicle family are expected to be unveiled during the Victory Day Parade on Red Square, May 9, 2015 in Moscow.

Contractor : Uralvagonzavod production association
Initial Operational Capability (IOC) : March 2024
Total Production : 2,300
Unitary Cost : RUB 250 million

The Armata T-14, Object 149, is a fifth generation MBT intended as the replacement for the Russian Army's T-64, T-72 and T-80 tanks. In April 2011, the Russian Army officials claimed the new main battle tank would have new characteristics compared to its predecessors. Fully automated loading for the primary gun system, separated engine compartment, isolated ammunition container and a crew capsule featuring multi-layered armor. This layout is far more survivable from the crew standpoint tank traditional tank arrangements. The unmanned turret is fitted with a 2A82-1M 125mm smoothbore cannon with improved accuracy compared with previous Russian 125mm guns. The turret is provided with two arms: one equipped with a twin-barrel 12.5mm machine gun and the other equipped with a 30mm sub-caliber cannon to take out helicopters and airplanes flying at low altitude. The T-14 tank may be fitted with an active defense system to counter incoming anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) or artillery shells approaching at speeds of up to 3,000 meters per second.

The T-14 is fully computerized and automated reducing the need of manpower and can fire the 125mm cannon while on the move. A crew of only two-man who can deploy the tank's weapon systems compared with the T-90A's three-man. The tank's sensor package aimed at providing outstanding targeting capabilities includes several electro-optical devices and an active phased array antenna radar. The radar system can track 40 surface targets and 25 airborne targets simultenously at ranges of up to 100 kilometers. The Russian Army plans call for the procurement of 2,300 T-14 tanks over a decade beginning in 2017.
