The Challenger is a derivative of the Chieftain main battle tank modified to produce the Shir for Iran. After Iran's 1979 revolution, the Shir project was taken over by the British Army a redesigned as the Challenger. The Challenger replaced the Chieftain as the iron fists of the British Army. It features a more powerful engine, rated at 1,200 hp, and improved protection thanks to its Chobham armor.

The Challenger 2E is an enhanced version of Challenger 2 main battle tank optimized for the harshest environments providing outstanding firepower and mobility. The Challenger 2E main battle tank is powered by a Europack engine which provides 1,500 hp instead of the 1,200 hp of the CV12 engine. The hull and turret have been redesigned to minimize millimeter radar wave returns and the IR signature has been reduced increasing Challenger 2E survivability. Built-in auto diagnosis system and the use of Line Replaceable Unit have optimized maintainability and availability.

The Challenger main gun is a 120mm L11A5 smooth bore cannon able to strike targets 3,200 meters away. The secondary armament consists of two 7.62mm machine guns, one coaxial ant the other on the turret.

The Challenger is powered by a Rolls-Royce CV12 diesel engine rated at 1,200 hp. The combat-proven Challenger was deployed within the British Amy in 1983 and destroyed more than 300 Iraqi armored vehicles during the Gulf War in 1991. Currently the Challenger 1 is being replaced by the more powerful Challenger 2 main battle tank.

The Challenger 2 is an improved model of the Challenger 1 main battle tank incorporating more than 150 improvements to achieve increased reliability and maintainability. The Challenger 2 turret is a totally new design and the Chobham armor has been updated improving survivability as well as protection against anti-tank weapons. The Challenger 2 main armament is a high-pressure 120mm L30 smooth bore gun. Secondary armament consists of two 7.62mm machine guns. In addition of the gunner's sight, it also features a Commander's Independent Thermal Sight providing a 360-degree coverage and hunter-killer capability. Challenger 2 retains the CV12 engine which powered the Challenger 1 main battle tank. The Challenger 2 was deployed successfully in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s and recently during operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 (Operation Telic for the British Army). They will replace Challenger 1 in the British Army.

The Challenger 3 is an upgraded variant intended as replacement for the Challenger 2 main battle tank within the British Army. The Challenger 3 is expected to feature improved sensor and armor as well as a new smooth bore 120mm main gun from Rheinmetall. The British Army plans for the upgrade of 150 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 standard by the mid 2020s. In May 2021 BAE Systems and Rheinmetall Defence were awarded a £800 million contract for the upgrade of 148 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 standard.

The Challenger 3 is expected to remain in service until 2040.
