The Leguan is a bridge laying system designed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) to meet the requirements of the Norwegian, Greek, Belgian and Finnish armed forces. The Leguan can create a 10.8-t aluminum alloy-made 26 meter bridge of load class MLC 70/80. The fully-automatic equipment enables bridges to be built and reloaded in five-to-eight minutes, even by remote control. It is so easy to handle that the bridge can even be laid or reloaded by one person in an enclosed vehicle. With additional pontoons the Leguan bridge can build ferries of variable load classes, and if necessary linked together to form floating bridges.
Originally, the Leguan bridge layer was designed for integration on the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 main battle tanks' tracked chassis. The bridge system has also been integrated successfully on PT-91 in Poland, M1A2/M104 Wolverines in the United States and M47/M60 in Spain. Sisu 10x10 and MAN 8x8 wheeled vehicles are also suitable for bridge layer vehicle applications. In February 2009, KMW made public the existence of a new version designed to lay two bridges, each 14 metres in length, with improved performance off-road.
