The Strela-1, SA-9 Gaskin Western designation, is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system based on the BRDM-2 chassis. Equipped with four 9M31 missiles and a detection radar provides air defense against hostile aircraft flying at low altitude at longer ranges. Lightweight Strela-1 can engage targets at ranges of 8,000 kilometers and 6,000 meters of altitude. Typically during an engagement this SAM system fires two 9M31/M missiles near simultaneously to maximize kill probability.
