The Soviet Union's T-62 is derived from T-55 Main Battle Tank (MBT) adding greater firepower utilizing a 115mm smoothbore gun as primary armament. It entered service in the early 1960s replacing T-55 as the front line tank in the Soviet Army. It retained all design limitations from T-54 and T-55 tank series. Production ceased in the mid-1970s. Like the T-54/55 it was sold to international customers. The T-62 was replaced in the 1970s and 1980s by T-72 and T-80 MBTs. The Type 69 is a copy produced by China.
