The Kalashnikov AK-12 is a fifth generation assault riffle developed and manufactured by Izhmash JSC for the Russian Armed Forces. The AK-12 assault riffle development was completed in 2011 and deliveries to the Russian Army for testing starting in early 2012. The construction and ergonomics of the rifle will be changed as a result of the tests. The new family of automatic rifles might be ready for production in 2013 replacing the AK-47. The new assault riffle leverages the same features of previous Kalashnikov guns simplicity, reliability and relatively low production cost. The AK-12 is based on a simple automatic rifle configuration with an option to mount powerful muzzles and large magazines of up to 95 cartridges. Izhmash plans call for the development of 20 versions for both military and police customers with caliber of cartridges from 5.45x39 to 7.62x51 mm.
The Picatinny rails were integrated in the construction of the AK-12. The rails are used to mount additional devices such as optical, collimating and night sights, mexometer, grenade launchers, lights, target indicators and other equipment. The riffle has folding stock, and the height-adjustable heelpiece. The operating rod handle can be mounted either on the left or on the right, making the weapon suitable for both left-handed and right-handed people. The AK-12 can fire in single shots, three shots and automatic fire modes. It also incorporates a new mechanic sight with enhanced sightline, new firing mechanism and state-of-the-art technologies in the field of coatings and materials.
