The Don-2NP, also called Pill Box by NATO and Pyramid, is a massive radar system based near Moscow and intended to detect and track small objects into space. It was developed in the 1980s as a key element of the Soviet Union anti-missile defense program and entered service in 1989. The 100-meter square, 45-meter high phased-array radar provides 360-degree coverage against small objects in space in support of ground-based interceptor missiles. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the Don-2NP radar has been integrated as part of Russian Armed Forces aerospace defense. In May 2012, Russia offered the Don-2NP radar system as part of the NATO's European missile defense initiative against medium- and long-range ballistic missile threats.
