The GAU-12/U is a five-barrel 25mm Gatling gun developed to fit into airborne and ground-based platforms. With a muzzle velocity in excess of 1,000 meters per second and a rate of fire of 4,200 rounds per minute this gun system provides an effective low cost weapon for a wide range of mission profiles from air-to-surface to air-to-air engagements. General Dynamics introduced the GAU-12 multi-barrel gun system in the early 1970s to serve in a variant of platforms. The GAU-12/U gun has been integrated on land platforms such as the US Marine Corps (USMC) Light Armored Vehicle Air Defense variant (LAV-AD), sea platforms and airborne platforms such as the USMC AV-8B Harrier V/STOL aircraft and the US Air Force AC-130U gunship.

The GAU-22/A is a lightweight four-barrel 25mm Gatling gun derived from the proven GAU-12/U gun introduced in the early 1970s. The GAU-22/A delivers increased reliability and improved accuracy over the GAU-12/U gun system. The new gun system also offers lower maintenance costs. The GAU-22/A has been selected for the F-35 Lightning II, formerly known as the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), being carried internally in the US Air Force F-35A variant and externally in the US Marine Corps and Navy F-35B and F-35C variants. General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products started the production of the GAU-22/A gun in 2009. More than 3,000 guns could be produced under the JSF program for the United States Armed Forces and several export customers.
