TB-29 is a state-of-the-art submarine towed sonar array developed to operate in conjunction with the AN/BQQ-5(E) sonar system and the AN/BSY-1 and BSY-2 submarine combat systems. It is longer than its predecessors and thus provides superior detection, classification and localization capabilities. The primary users for the TB-29 towed sonar systems are the US Navy's nuclear attack submarine fleet. The US Navy plans call for the TB-29 sonar array to be deployed aboard Los Angeles, Seawolf and Virginia-class submarines.
The TB-29A is a variant featuring half production cost than the TB-29 model thanks to extensive utilization of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technology. The US Navy awarded TB-29A contract for development and production of up to 11 systems in December 1998. The first TB-29A sonar array was handed over to the US Navy in November 2001 and the fist phase of technical evaluation aboard a Los Angeles-class submarine completed in March 2002.
