The Ataka, AT-9 Whirlwind NATO-codename or 9M120 Soviet industrial code, is a long range, supersonic anti-tank missile designed to be installed on a wide range of airborne, naval and ground-based platforms. It features a tandem shaped charge warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) protected tanks and heavyweight armored vehicles. A version fitted with High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead was designed to defeat small vessels, fortifications, low altitude helicopters and airplanes flying at low speed, and light armored vehicles both stationary or on the move. In addition to the tandem HEAT, the Shturm-Ataka weapon can be provided alternatively with demolition and penetration rod warheads. Its guidance system consists of Semi Automatic Command to Line-Of-Sight (SACLOS) via radiofrequency immune to Infrared (IR) and electronic jamming. The former Soviet Union fielded the Ataka missile family in 1989.
