The K-X or K-4 is a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) being designed as a replacement for the K-15 missile in the near future after its deployment aboard Arihant-class of ballistic submarines which is slated to begin in 2011. The K-X will offer a maximum range of 3,500 kilometers compared to the K-15's 750 kilometers carrying a 5,000 kilogram payload. The extended range will be attained at the expense of the nuclear warhead's weight. As of July 2009, the K-X missile is at the early stages of development.
