The S-8 is an 80mm unguided rocket developed by the former Soviet Union for use by airborne platforms to engage targets on the ground. These rockets are deployed on external pods carrying 7 to 20 S-8s each and compatible with both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. The S-8 was developed in the 1970s and entered service in 1984. There are a variety of S-8 rocket models with their range varying from 1.2 to 4.5 kilometers, weighing between 11.2 to 15.2 kilograms, and their length varying from 1.5 to 1.7 meters. Between 2014 and 2018 the Russian Air Force started replacing the S-8 family rockets by the new S-8OFP widely improved rocket.
The S-8KOM variant is equipment with a fragmentation warhead to engage manpower, armored targets and manpower. The S-8BM features a penetrating warhead to destroy material and manpower inside fortifications. The S-8T is intended to engage tanks even protected by explosive reactive armor. The S-8DF was designed to engage material and equipment in the open field. The S-8OM is intended to illuminate terrain at night. The S-8TsM is intended to mark targets for other platforms. The S-8PM is intended to deploy countermeasures.
