The Grenade Machine Gun (GMG) is a 40mm 53-caliber automatic grenade launcher designed by Heckler & Koch to provide fire support against ground targets to armed forces worldwide. The fragmentation and armor-piercing ammunitions used on the GMG is suitable against dismounted infantrymen and armored targets such as light armored vehicles. In addition, the GMG weapon system provides rates of fire greater than those of mortar systems. Typically, the GMG can be used by dismounted infantrymen with the weapon system mounted on tripod. Installation on vehicles, patrol boats and helicopters is possible as well.

In November 2006, the UK (United Kingdom) MoD ordered 40 GMG to be mounted on Wimik (weapons mount installation kit) Land Rovers or ground-based tripods. These weapon systems were bought to be deployed by Royal Marines in Afghanistan beginning in December 2006.
