The RPG-7 is a cost-effective, hand-held, multi-caliber anti-tank rocket launcher introduced by the Soviet Union in the late 1950s. Thereafter, it became one of the most popular weapon systems in Third World countries conflicts due to its reliability, effectiveness and low operating and acquisition costs. It was designed to engage tanks, armored combat vehicles and suppress fire weapons and manpower in open terrain, sheltered in trenches, urban and rural buildings made from bricks and reinforced concrete. The RPG-7D is a shortened variant featuring the barrel split into two parts and intended for use by airborne troops. The RPG-7V1 is the current production variant of the RPG-7 weapon system.
The RPG-7V1 using a 40mm launch tube can fire a variety of rocket assisted projectiles (RAPs): 93mm PG-7VL shaped-charge grenade at ranges of 300 meters and 500mm of armor piercing capability; 105mm PG-7VR shaped-charge, tandem grenade at ranges of 200 meters and 600mm of armor piercing capability against Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) protected targets; 105mm TBG-7V thermobaric grenade at ranges of 200 meters having a kill radius of 10 meters; and 40mm OG-7V fragmentation grenade at ranges of 700 meters with a kill area of 150 square meters against personnel and light armored vehicles. The RPG-7D rocket launcher is 630mm long in carrying position.
