The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) XASM-3 is an advanced air-launched anti-ship missile being developed to hit surface ships protected with state-of-the-art air defense systems. The missile features supersonic speed to hit the latest surface combatans. The missile development started in 2003 with the missile first firing in 2005. The ASM-3 missile is able to reach a maximum speed of Mach 3. The new ASM-3 anti-ship missile development and fielding should be completed by 2020. Mass production and entry into service is slated for 2019 being released from F-2 jets. Finally the missile was cancelled in favor of a extended range variant to be deployed by 2024.

The XASM-3 ER is an extended range version of the XASM-3 anti-ship missile intended to engage surface ships and inshore targets from standoff ranges outside the enemy air defenses. The new missile is expected to feature a maximum range of roughly 400 kilometers while being capable of Mach. The Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) is expected to deploy the new cruise missile by 2024 with its development starting in 2019.

The ASM-3 Kai is an improved version of the ASM-3A supersonic cruise missile with an estimated range of 2,000 kilometers.
